Letter from a physician from a prominent New York family to his brother, a newly elected judge. Campbell is prospecting for gold and writes of his experiences during the past year, which includes an unsuccessful attempt at practicing medicine in Mazatlan, Mexico, due to his lack of Spanish. He describes his return to San Francisco on the day of the great fire and subsequent return to a simple life in the gold mines.
